what makes fairstead special?

Day School and Nursery

A unique independent day school for girls and boys aged 1 to 11 years
in the heart of Newmarket, on the Suffolk/Cambridgeshire border

Fairstead House really is a school with heart! All pupils are encouraged to relish life and to find wonder in the world around them. We offer an excellent education, providing a wealth of opportunities taught by passionate staff.

At Fairstead House, learning is memorable and fun, with each child being nurtured to develop their individual talents and encouraged to be confident in their learning. They are purposeful and passionate, energised and empathetic. Our curriculum is inventive and stimulating, with specialist teaching across a range of subjects including music, drama, languages, and sport.

We also provide an engaging Enrichment Programme, offering off-site trips and in-school clubs and activities. Residential trips start in Key Stage 2 and we are very excited to offer older pupils the chance to travel abroad to develop their language skills. Music and drama are also key strengths with musical productions of a superb calibre; musicals include Matilda, The Wizard of Oz, and The Lion King to mention a few.

Fairstead House is a magical school with confident children who always want to do their best. Together, with our staff and the wider school community, they create a sense of family in which everyone feels safe and secure and an environment in which everyone can be true to themselves.

If you would like to experience the wonders enjoyed by our pupils, then please get in touch to arrange a visit. I look forward to meeting you.

Best wishes

Prep School

The Preparatory School is made up of the following departments.
Pre-prep   Reception, Years 1 – 2
Prep          Years 3 – 6

In both Pre-prep and Prep, each child is placed in a form where the teacher is responsible for day-to-day pastoral care as well as the academic progress of the children. Classes are small and nurturing, with every child encouraged to do their best and develop a love of learning.

Close contact between staff and parents is always important and parents are encouraged to meet and discuss with form teachers issues and celebrations as and when they arise. More formal Parents’ Evenings are held each term. In October, immediately before half term, a ‘settling-in’ evening is held so parents may meet with staff to discuss how their child is settling into their new class.

Reports are issued to parents at the end of the Michaelmas and Summer terms and close attention is paid to the levels of achievement and effort of each child.  Progress, both academic and social is carefully monitored and tracked by means of on-going assessment. This is carried out through continuous daily formative assessment and termly summative assessments.
